About Jody

Jody Gentian Bower is a writer and cultural mythologist. Her undergraduate degree in psychobiology led to a 30-year career in scientific and medical writing before she followed her bliss and earned her PhD in Mythological Studies with an emphasis in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute in 2012. Her dissertation on “Recurrent Motifs in Women’s Fiction” won the Honorary Mention: Dissertation of Excellence award in the 2014 Kore Award competition of the Association for the Study of Women and Mythology. Dr. Bower expanded on her dissertation’s conclusions in Jane Eyre’s Sisters: How Women Live and Write the Heroine Story (Quest 2015), which examines the “wandering heroine” story, a story that has been told for centuries yet somehow escaped the notice of most scholars.

Dr. Bower is also the author of The Princess Powers Up: Watching the Sleeping Beauty Become Warrior Goddesses (Mandorla 2020), which explores the evolution of female agency in scifi and fantasy shows over the last 80 years. She writes and lectures about hero/heroine journeys, including a degendered take on the various journeys and how they each can serve the individual. You can read her blog on myths and archetypes in movies and television and find a list of resources for those interested in the heroine journey at jodybower.com.

Dr. Bower recently took a new position as a book editor for New Harbinger Press. She also offers book coaching services to private clients.
